N’golo Capoeira

Button

The N’golo Capoeira, founded in 1987 in Guará, has since expanded to several locations in São Paulo, Pernambuco, Paraíba, Maranhão, Goiás, and Thailand. In Brasília, they have schools in Guará 1 and Guará 2, Lago Sul, and they also offer classes at the American School and the Japanese embassy.

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that integrates dance, acrobatics, music, and self-defense. Originating in Brazil during the 16th century, it was developed by enslaved Africans as a form of cultural expression and resistance. Over time, capoeira became a symbol of resistance against oppression. After the abolition of slavery in Brazil in 1888, capoeira continued to be practiced clandestinely due to its association with criminal elements, but it was eventually legalized and recognized as an important cultural practice.

Capoeira is not only a martial art but also a form of cultural expression, incorporating music, dance, and oral history. It has gained international recognition and is celebrated worldwide for its athleticism, artistry, and cultural richness. In 2014, UNESCO recognized capoeira as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, emphasizing its significance to Brazilian cultural identity. Its unique blend of physical, musical, and cultural elements makes it a dynamic and captivating practice that continues to evolve and inspire people globally.

The N’golo Capoeira Group offers classes for all ages and genders at various locations in Brasília. Mestra Daniele Raicenoks (with "Mestra" meaning "Master") speaks excellent English and is the main instructor at the American School and the Japanese embassy as well as in Guará 1. Her impressive personality and capoeira skills make her a great teacher.

In addition to being a school, the group is enthusiastic about performing publicly and promoting Brazilian cultural identity. Their performances involve audience participation, creating a unique experience. During the Pan South America Hash in June 2024, the group's performance was the most popular cultural event of the weekend.

If you want to immerse yourself in Brazilian culture or add a fun and enriching element to your event, contact the school or reach out to Dani personally to discuss your needs.
