Museu Vivo da Memória Candanga

Button

A space with the airs of the history of Brasília's construction. When visiting the Living Museum of Candanga Memory, we can feel like we are on a journey through time. The settings, objects, and photos present at the site commemorate the beginning of the Brazilian capital, a city created from the dream of Juscelino Kubitschek. And it's because of JK that the history of the space becomes even more interesting. Before becoming a museum, the site housed the Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira Hospital (HJKO), a space created to meet the demand in the Federal District, not only for injured workers in the construction, but also for other services, such as childbirth and outpatient care for children and homemakers. It was a complex of 23 wooden buildings that remained a hospital and support complex until 1974, when the District Hospital (now Hospital de Base) was inaugurated.

The space remained standing, and in 1985, by decree 9,036, the Government of the Federal District established the landmarking of the house complex, allowing the restoration process of the space. On April 26, 1990, the site was reopened and inaugurated under the name of the Living Museum of Candanga Memory (MVMC).

Administered by the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy (Secec), the Living Museum is situated between the Administrative Regions of Candangolândia and Núcleo Bandeirante. Along a picturesque avenue adorned with simple, vibrant houses and surrounded by fruit trees, the museum's setting exudes a lively charm. Within these premises, the narratives of diverse families unfold—stories that diverged from the visions conceived by urban planners, engineers, missionaries, politicians, and architects for the nascent city.

The ambiance aspires to mirror the warm identity of the Brazilian people, particularly those who would eventually embody the spirit of Brasília. The space beckons visitors on an authentic journey into the past, encapsulating the toil of the laborers who laid the foundations of this new city.

Over the years, the space has hosted numerous exhibitions, with a particular highlight being the permanent exhibition chronicling the lives of the "Candangos" ("Dust, Canvas, and Concrete"). Throughout its trajectory, the MVMC has evolved into a focal point for community workshops and educational initiatives catering to elementary school students. These programs instill notions of heritage education and cultural belonging, solidifying the museum's role as a reference in these domains.

Within the museum premises, the Veteran Car Brasília exhibition unfolds every Saturday. Showcasing a rotating collection of approximately 30 vintage cars, the exhibit is in a constant state of flux as owners retrieve their vehicles, making room for others to take their place.
