The Environmental Police of the Federal District (Polícia Ambiental do Distrito Federal) is an institution responsible for promoting the inspection and control of activities related to the environment in the region of the Federal District, Brazil. Also known as the Environmental Military Police Battalion Batalhão de Polícia Militar Ambiental (BPMA), it is an organization linked to the Military Police of the Federal District.
The main objective of the Environmental Police of the Federal District is the protection and preservation of natural resources such as forests, rivers, wildlife, and flora, as well as the fight against environmental crimes. Its duties include environmental patrolling, carrying out operations to combat illegal deforestation, wildlife trafficking, predatory fishing, environmental pollution, and other offenses against the environment.
In addition to enforce environmental laws, the Environmental Police is responsible to capture wild animals on residential houses and properties and to facilitate contact with the environmental policing teams and ensure the safety of the animals while preventing potential attacks.
According to the department, approximately ten wild animals are rescued daily throughout the Federal District. They are typically snakes such as boa constrictors, cascavéis, and jararacas.
If a wild animal encounter within premises, the recommendation from the Environmental Military Police is to isolate it within its natural environment where it was found and call the Environmental Police animal rescue hotline on either the 190 number or the special number 61 99351-5736.
After the capture of the animal, and it is in good health, they are released in the nearest conservation area. If they are injured, they are taken to the Wild Animal Screening Center (Cetas) operated by the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama).
